A few weeks ago, I was walking through a restaurant and saw a woman wearing a Baylor t-shirt. I’m always excited to see fellow Baylor fans, so I said “hello” and told her I liked her shirt. She gave me a blank stare, so I clarified and said, “I like your Baylor shirt.” She still looked at me a little cross-eyed, and so one more time I tried, “You know, the Baylor Bears shirt you have on? I like it. I graduated from there.” To my displeasure she replied, “Oh, are they the bears? I just wear this shirt because a friend gave it to me.”
I take my “Baylor support” a little too seriously, so I walked away from that conversation thinking that maybe this woman should give that shirt back to her friend or maybe just educate herself. I mean, she didn’t even know that the mascot was the bears? How dare she wear the t-shirt? (Yes, I know I have a problem and am taking this too seriously…)
This got me thinking…What if all Jesus-followers did to display their faith was wear Jesus t-shirts, display “fish” stickers on their cars, and occasionally attend a weekend service? What if one day you saw a lady wearing a Jesus t-shirt in the restaurant and said, “I like your Jesus shirt,” and she just gave you the blank stare?
Scripture tells us,
“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” 1 Peter 3:15
I have found two things best prepare me to give the reason for my hope in Jesus.
First is consistently meeting with other Jesus-followers.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17
Second is consistently reading my Bible with a desire to learn about Jesus and my Heavenly Father.
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Joshua 1:8
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
More and more, our world needs reason for hope. I desire not to stare blankly when given that opportunity to share. Are you prepared to give an answer for the reason you have hope in Jesus?
