This coming Sunday, I am going to walk through Proverbs, Chapter 3, which contains one of the most well-known of all the Proverbs.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Are you familiar with a high ropes course? It’s a series of challenges suspended from telephone poles high above the ground. You walk across swinging rope bridges, tight ropes, etc. For those who know me, you know I am not a fan of heights and that I never have been. I don’t like getting on ladders or roofs. Growing up, I went to a camp in Colorado, and when I was in high school, we got to do the high ropes course at the camp. I was not as thrilled that day as some of my peers but participated all the same.
One of the challenges we had to do was called the “Leap of Faith.” For this challenge, I had to be strapped into a harness with ropes supported by my peers on the ground. I then had to climb up a telephone pole and balance before jumping off and ringing a bell that was suspended six or so feet away.
As you might imagine, there is a whole lot about this situation I was not a fan of. Telephone poles are high. The ends of telephone poles do not provide a very large or stable platform. And, my high school peers were in charge of making sure I didn’t fall to my death.
Trust was the name of the game. Trust that the holds as I climbed up the pole were secure. Trust that I could balance on top of the pole. Trust that the ropes and harness were secure and would work. And trust that my peers would catch me after I jumped. That day, I placed my trust in all these things and can say, while I didn’t enjoy the experience, I was happy I accomplished it and that it worked out well.
When we trust in something, we recognize that we don’t have control. That can be a scary thing for a lot of us, especially when we’re putting that trust in other humans. The good news for followers of Jesus is when we give up control to God, we are giving it to someone who is perfect and loves us perfectly. While we might not like the outcome, we can be sure our trust in Him will never let us down.
Trusting the Lord with all our heart is not something we do once and move on; it’s something we have to do daily. That is my prayer for you this week.
