Goldfish

When my kids were little, it seemed like any problem could be solved with Goldfish crackers or Cheerios. We made sure to always stay stocked up on those snacks because they were the one thing we could count on for stopping temper tantrums. Unfortunately, as our kids starting growing up, the problems became a little more complex, and a quick snack didn’t solve things.

The reality of being an adult means my problems are too complicated for a quick, simple fix that I can handle myself. In fact, often when I try to fix things myself, I end up in a tangled mess.

It's humbling to realize I have no power. The man inside of me wants to be able to take care of business and find a solution. But no matter how bad things are, I will always make things worse by flexing my muscles and beating my chest.

Fortunately, there is an effective way to deal with the problems in our lives, even though it seems opposed to what the world tries to teach us. The Scriptures tell us that the people who humble themselves will gain honor and find favor with God.

God has a unique and special purpose for each of us, but we must remove our pride and let Him lead the way. Only then can we be infused with His wisdom and counsel. Only then can we see the big picture. Only then can we find permanent solutions rather than temporary fixes.

Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor. (Proverbs 29:23)

But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (James 4:6)

All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. (1 Peter 5:5-6)

Peace,
Nick
