Has anyone ever “taken on” anything for you? Has anyone ever helped you out when you were unable to help yourself?
When Sharon and I were newly married, during an especially brutally cold and snowy winter, we were renting a very small cottage in Indiana. It was so cold and so poorly insulated our canned goods would freeze in the cupboards and the cast iron bathtub would instantly turn hot water cold. Heat was provided by an oil furnace and our oil tank was all but empty. Even though we both worked several part time jobs, while I went fulltime to seminary, we still did not have enough money to refill the tank. Thankfully, without asking them, Sharon’s parents graciously “took on” our debt and kept us from freezing to death.
In John 1:19 we are told “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’” These words about Jesus, who “takes way the sin of the world!” literally mean, “takes away or takes upon himself.” Beautiful! Jesus did for us what we were incapable of doing for ourselves. He put on Himself all of the sin of the world. He took on our debt to save us. Jesus placed on Himself all of our rebellion then carried it away to death, leaving it there upon His resurrection.
Please don’t ever say you have never won a jackpot. Don’t ever say no one has ever laid down their life for you. Don’t ever say you are unimportant, unwanted, and unloved. The Most Important One has already proven all of these statements to be untrue. If you desire to firsthand experience these truths, then you need to trust Him and, in faith, hand over all your rebellious baggage for Him to forever carry away and then you need to walk with Him. What do you need to, right now, hand over to Jesus to take on and carry away?
