You Can’t Change!
As I’ve been pondering, it seems to me one of the greatest lies of the devil and also one of God’s greatest truths is one and the same, “You can’t change!”
One of the Greatest Lies of the Devil:
Think of how many lives have been paralyzed, left underdeveloped, filled with depression, and stifled in their joy and fruitfulness because they have heard and believed, at least to one degree or another, this sinister lie.
How many have heard Satan’s whispers and sometimes shouts as they once again find themselves falling back into old bad habits or because one more time they failed some goal others or they had set for themselves? The Father of Lies speaks, “You can’t change! You can’t do it! You will never be free from addiction… you’ll never have the type of love and friendships you desire… you’ll never lose that weight… you will always be afraid… you’ll never be smart enough… you can never be the type of person God desires for you to be… you will never be able to please God!”
How many have also heard this diabolical lie reinforced by others? Maybe it was by a parent? Maybe it came from a spouse and/or lover? Maybe it came from a coach, senior officer, family member, or boss? Maybe you have heard it so often you now keep repeating it back to yourself. Is this true of you?
One of the Greatest Truths of God:
The truth is that the possibility of true change is the very Gospel and the Good News of Jesus. His defeat of sin and death by way of the Resurrection is all about establishing the reality that change is now indeed possible for everyone. Real change! New life change! Becoming a new person forever change! It’s true, you can’t change, but Jesus can change you!
Satan is absolutely, technically and theologically correct by saying “you” can’t ultimately change by your own power or will and God would agree. But, the Great Deceiver is absolutely wrong and knows it when he convinces anyone that they are stuck in sin and can never be anyone special. Don’t believe it! To believe his lie is to deny the power of the Resurrection! It is to deny that Jesus can forgive our sins and make us new! It is to deny that, as we trust in Jesus, someday we will be sin-free and reside in and with perfection forever. Jesus the Christ is the greatest and most complete Change Agent ever! Trust Him! Some of the most powerful words spoken before positive and deep change are, “I can’t do it! Help me Jesus!”
Please consider just a few of the many verses which speak to this truth:
2 Corinthians 2:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
Ephesians 4:22-24… “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
Isaiah 43:18-19, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
Revelation 21:5, “He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’”
