Within the adoption world, “Gotcha Day” represents the day that a family brings an adopted
child into their forever family. It’s a day of celebration and is something many adopted families celebrate on a yearly basis, much like a birthday.
This coming week marks the Gotcha Day of our two boys joining our family. It’s a day I will
never forget! Liz, Jewel, and I made the long trek from Wichita, KS, to Entebbe, Uganda. After landing in Entebbe, we drove through the large and bustling capital of Uganda, named Kampala. We continued on our drive, and after a few hours on winding dirt roads, we arrived at the Bukaleba Children’s Center. I can still remember walking the long sidewalk and spotting my boys for the first time. They were both right around one year old. Jewel quickly called dibs to be the first to hold her brothers and claim her place as big sister in the relationship. Liz and I soaked up the moment, and it’s a day etched in my soul, one that changed my life forever.
As I look back on our Gotcha Day, I’m amazed at how deep and instant our love was for our
boys. They were ours! And while the journey has been far from easy, our love has only grown deeper and deeper!
In the Scriptures, we are told that our relationship with the Heavenly Father is like one of
adoption. To all who receive Jesus, to those who believe in Jesus, we are given the right to
become children of God! (John 1:12-13) We are adopted into the forever family of the Heavenly Father. His love for us is instant and deep, and we start a Jesus-journey of healing, which is far from easy, and yet our love for each other grows deeper and deeper!
Adoption in this world is a beautiful reflection of the Heavenly Father’s eternal adoption of those of us who have placed our faith in Jesus and joined His forever family!

“I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” (2 Cor. 6:18)
But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. (Gal. 4:4-5).
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him, we cry, “Abba, Father.”
(Romans 8:14-15).
